Michael Porter (麥可波特, Harvard Business School 教授) 提出「五力競爭架構」 (five forces of competition framework, 又稱為「五力分析」), 說明「產業的獲利能力」取決於「五種競爭壓力」, 包含水平的競爭: 來自 substitutes, potential entrants, existing firms 的競爭, 以及垂直的競爭: suppliers 及 buyers 的議價能力.
此架構雖然考慮到 substitutes, 但沒有考慮到 complements, 其中 substitutes 的存在會造成產品價值降低, 而 complements 的存在則有助於產品價值提升.
舉例來說，可抽換式的墨水匣使得印表機的價值提高; 汽油, 汽車保險, 維修服務使得汽車的價值提高.
因此若將 complements 考慮進來, 產業競爭架構如下圖所示:
